QUICK DEV TIP #11 UE4 - BLUEPRINTS - QUICK IMPORTING FILES

Got a really quick one for you this week. This is something I found out recently and I’ve been using a lot at the beginning of projects, including in my Epic Mega Jam 2020 Entry: https://cbgamedev.itch.io/survive-another-night

Did you know you can import entire folder structures into the Unreal engine?

The normal way to import assets would be to create separate folders in the engine that somewhat mimic your source assets outside of the engine (This helps keep things tidy and easy to find if you need them). You would make a new folder, name it and then import the assets in batches based on each folder, as shown below.

However, the easier and quicker way to do it is to drag folders into the engine to import instead of the assets themselves. This will then hierarchically bring in all the assets within those folders. So if you have folders in folders with assets in, it will bring those in the same structure as well.

I really like this technique and use it all the time now, particularly when importing sounds. It is particularly useful in times when you need to import a large number of files for example if you are prototyping, game jamming or starting a new project. Hope you find it useful!
